Discussion:
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed (Error 1719)

For a couple of weeks, I've been unable to install or uninstall an
64-bit applications that uses the Windows Installer. I alway get th
message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This ca
occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact you
support personnel for assistance." Installing and uninstalling 32-bi
applications that rely on MSI does work correctly

- I have unregistered/registered both instance of msiexec (System32 an
SysWOW64). Done this in normal as well as safe mode, rebooting afte
each try
- The service is registered and running. (Doesn't stop when i
starts.
- As far as I can tell, registry entries in the MSIServer key ar
correct
- When logging the installer results, it reporst an error 1719 righ
after the line "Connected to service for CA interface
- Installed service pack 1 but that didn't fix the proble
- Tried every solution found in kb and forums all over the place an
nothing does the trick

This was merely an annoyance at first but now I really need to instal
and uninstall some stuff and I'm stuck. I don't want to do a fres
install either

I finally found a solution to my problem.

Altough my MSIServer registry key was correct, there was an Enum subkey
that was causing all my problems. Once I removed this key, the 64-bit
installer started working again.

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press ENTER.

Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Services
\MSIServer

From the File menu, choose Export, and save the branch to a .REG file.

Exit the Registry Editor.

Open the .REG file using Notepad.

Copy the file contents and post it here.

Hi DAB,

I'm unable to download the attachment (from the Gateway you posted from). Perhaps you can use a newsreader to attach files, or post in plain-text format, or mail the file to me directly.

Hello Ramesh,

I have the same problem. To fix the Enum subkey, you asked Mustafa to
open the .Reg file, copy it and post it to this forum. But, for unknown
reasons he didn't post it. Therefore, I'll post mine instead so that you
could explain how to delete the subkey.

Thanks before hand.

Salim,

Download and run msiserver.reg linked in that page, even though Windows Installer service is listed correctly. That ought to help.

Thank you for your solution tips. Yet I don't know how to run
downloaded software when Windows Installer doesn't work properly. I
fact, I tried to run msiserver.reg but it didn't work

Anyway, This is not my problem now. Due to a problem with my interne
connection, I re-installed Windows Vista with Packard Bell's Smar
Restore. Due to a minor problem, I tried then to restore my computer t
a prior point in time. It didn't work. I tried to restore it to anothe
point in time. It didn't work either. All I keep getting after eac
attempt is the following error message:"System Restore did not complet
successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were no
changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during system restore"

So can you or anyone else help me fix this problem

I also have the "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed
problem (in Vista 32 SP1). I've read and tried all the solution
suggested here and elsewhere on the Web, but nothing works so far. I
seems like an MSI Server registry fix ought to be part of the answer
but when I apply any such fix and reboot, the original entries ar
unchanged (I've checked the permissions)

Eventually I guess I'll have to do a repair install of Vista, but as
have SP1 installed I believe I'll need to create a slipstreamed setu
disk in order to do the repair

If any kind person has a suggested solution that hasn't already bee
mentioned anywhere, it would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

HELP

Ok I am havingtghe same problem. I have tried everything. Tried to
do the 4.5 installer reinstall, and it tells me the updates are not for
my system. Did the google searches and tried it all, and still nothing
works. I have also tried the Reg Edit, but not sure if I did it right,
because it still does not work.

Do you remove all the ENUM data, or just part of it?

I tried to do the Installer cleaner, but I get the 1719 error then
also, so it cant even install... Talk about Ironic!!!

Thanks for all your help!!!

I suddenly became unable to install some applications. Whenever I would
try,
I would get the following:
"Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This
can
occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows
Installer is
not correctly installed. ..."

The solutions I found in the MS KB were not effective for me.

solution
The paths I use assume that Windows is installed in the C:\WINDOWS
folder. Change the
path to match your installation if necessary.

In Registry Editor, navigate to:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
then change the DisplayName value to:
C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\msiexec.exe /V

Close registry editor, then register the installer by opening a command

prompt and running:
C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\msiexec.exe /regserver

*if this stops working you need to run the comand prompt again to
register the services - this will happen after you run updates on your
server. *

I deleted it directly inside regedit. (Altough backing up the key is
always a good precaution.) If you double-click on a .reg file it will
add it's content to the registry, but it won't delete any of the already
present keys. It will however replace any duplicated values with the
one in the file.

For me, that was the problematic registry key. Once I deleted that,
things started to work again. Just make sure you make a backup before
trying anything.

I have the same issue with the MS Installer service. I also have th
ENUM key. However, Everytime I delete the key it comes back? An
idea's where it comes from or how to get rid of it so I can get passe
this and move on with my life! I've spent way way too many hours o
this issue
