Windows Explorer often stopping when copying/moving files

I'm running MS Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
For last few months when dragging/copying/moving files between folders I
get repeated messages saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working", it re
boots and then all is ok until I do same again
Anyone suggest a way to fix this please?

Runa full CHKDSK and fix on the system drive(s).

Ran CHKDSK and that didn't help, any other suggestions please?

Hi Joe
I suggest you to run the System File Checker tool to troubleshoo
missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista by following th
steps provided below
1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, clic
“Start”, click “All Programs”, clic
“Accessories”, right-click “Command Prompt”, an
then click “Run as administrator”. If you are prompted fo
an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, o
click “Allow”
2. At the command prompt, type the following command without quotes, an
then press ENTER:
"sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replace
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions that may fix th
issue

This situation seems to be quite similar to the one I experienced some
time ago. I wound up with some system files which could not be repaired
by windows and I had no way either to repair them.
End result: removal of the old drive with replacement and installation
of Windows Vista, Home Premium, from scratch.
A lot of work, especially with WU, but it paid off.
Hopefully you don't have have to do it.

I ran that, it said found some corrupt files. Went to check the CBS log file
as it suggested but unable to open despite being a TXT file!

I'm so tempted to upgrade to Windows 8 but is that good idea with maybe a
bad disk?

Bear in mind that I am not an expert, but my suggestion is this:
Since you are in favor of upgrading to Win8 and in all probability
nothing is wrong with your disk, format the drive and reinstall Vista.
Then you can purchase the upgrade to Win8 at a reduced price, only it
will not save any of your personal files, unless you saved them
beforehand on a flash drive or something like it.

In my case I dismounted the old drive containing the bad system files
and started fresh with a brand new drive of the same caliber.
When I check now with CHKDSK or sfc /scannow,there are no problems.
BTW, when I tried to open the log file you mentioned, I couldn't because
of missing administrative rights or something like that.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck, Joe.

All my documents are totally safe in about 5 different backups, I would have
it no other way!

Could I not try a "repair" with Windows CD? Its not too bad to work with, PC
hangs a few times a day but otherwise works well still, just a bit annoying

I've run CHKDSK a few times and never had issues

Anything is worth a try before the drastic measure.
My suggestion is what you may call 'a last resort'.
In my case it actually was and, at any rate,
